Origin & Usage

Yelang (夜郎) was a small state on the southwestern frontier of the Han empire. The Records of the Grand Historian relates that when a Han envoy reached it, its king asked whether Yelang or Han was the larger — a question that makes sense only to someone who has never left his own valley. The phrase fixes that moment: to be self-important (自大) in the manner of Yelang. What it targets is not arrogance in general but the particular kind produced by isolation, where the standard of comparison is simply too small. It is aimed at people, companies and institutions that mistake being the biggest thing in view for being big.
