Han Yu wrote that the sage looks on all with a single (一) regard (视) and extends the same (同) benevolence (仁) to each, holding close those nearby and reaching out to those far off. 仁 is the central Confucian virtue and is normally graduated by relationship — more is owed to a parent than to a stranger — so applying it flat, without that gradient, is the deliberately radical part. Teachers, employers and officials, and it is what people demand when they suspect they are being handled differently from somebody else.
