见仁见智

Origin & Usage

The Book of Changes says of the Way that the benevolent see it and call it benevolence, the wise see it and call it wisdom — the humane (仁) see (见) one thing, the wise (智) another. The point in the original is not that all readings are equal but that each observer finds what they already are, so a description of the Way doubles as a description of the describer. Modern use has flattened it into a polite way of ending an argument: reasonable people differ, let us leave it there. It is the standard formula for declining to adjudicate a matter of taste.
