望洋兴叹

Origin & Usage

In the Zhuangzi, the Lord of the Yellow River, proud of his swollen autumn flood, travels east until he reaches the North Sea and can find no end to it. He turns his face about and 望洋向若而叹 — looks up in awe (望洋) toward Ruo, the sea god, and sighs (叹). The idiom adds 兴, to raise or set going, so the modern form is raising (兴) that sigh. 望洋 is a binome for gazing upward, not the two characters read separately, which is the trap: there is no ocean in it. The sigh is not defeat but the moment his sense of his own scale collapses. Recognising that something is past your reach is the whole of it, and there is more humility in that than despair.
