Origin & Usage

Going in (入) deep (深) and coming out (出) shallow (浅). Both halves describe the same person, and the order is the whole claim: the depth comes first and is not negotiable, and the accessibility is what gets produced afterwards. That is what separates it from simplification, which skips the first step. For a teacher, a textbook or a popular science writer this is the highest praise available, and the test it sets is a hard one: an expert who cannot do it is not being complimented.
