才疏学浅

Origin & Usage

Talent (才) sparse (疏) and learning (学) shallow (浅). The formula is old: Gu Yong opens a memorial in the Book of Han with 材朽学浅，不通政事 — my abilities rotten, my learning shallow, no grasp of government — and then telling an emperor how to attend to the state. That is exactly how the phrase works: it buys the standing to say something by disclaiming the standing to say it. Learners should note that it is used only in the first person. Applied to somebody else it is not modesty but a direct insult, and Chinese speakers deploy it about themselves in prefaces, speeches and the opening of any awkward request.
