The Strategies of the Warring States has the Queen Dowager of Zhao receive an envoy from Qi and, before she has broken the seal on his letter, ask him three questions: is the harvest without trouble (无恙), are the people without trouble, is your king without trouble. The envoy takes offence at the ordering — he has come from a king and she has put the crops first. She explains that without the harvest there are no people, and without the people there is no king. 恙 named a specific affliction before it broadened, so to be without it is to be at peace (安然) and untouched.
