显眼包

xiǎn yǎn bāo

An 'attention-grabber' — a person, animal, or thing that grabs everyone's attention through a loud personality, bold appearance, or conspicuous antics; the class clown or show-off, now usually warm and teasing rather than harsh.

Origin

The term grew out of the dialect word 现眼包 (xiàn yǎn bāo) from Sichuan and Henan, where 现眼 means to embarrass oneself in public. As it went national online the characters shifted to the gentler 显眼 ('conspicuous, eye-catching') and the meaning softened from embarrassing to endearing; by 2023 it was one of the most-used buzzwords on Chinese social media, driven heavily by viral 'animal 显眼包' videos.
