Origin & Usage

Without (无) so much as a fine hair (毫) of doubt (疑问). 毫 is a real unit — the finest hair of an animal's winter coat, used in classical Chinese as the smallest measurable quantity, and it survives in 一丝一毫 and in 差之毫厘，谬以千里. Here it sets the threshold as low as the language can put it: not the smallest measurable doubt remains. The four-character phrase itself is modern rather than classical, with no source text behind it, and in use it functions less as a description than as a discourse marker — the Chinese equivalent of opening a sentence with the English phrase there is no question that.
