Tian Xiwei plays Lin Zhixia (林知夏), a physics prodigy with an IQ of 174 who is treated as a 怪胎 ('freak') by everyone around her; Hu Yitian plays Jiang Yubai (江逾白), the transfer student who becomes the one classmate willing to sit beside her. They start as high-school deskmates and academic rivals; she wins 保送 admission to Fudan, he vanishes when his mother is caught up in a fraud case, and they reunite as adults. The story runs into working life and marriage. The comma in the Chinese title is deliberate: genius and girlfriend as two competing labels for one person.
