The plot

Lin Zhixia is a physics genius. That's the whole problem.

She has an IQ of 174 and no instinct whatsoever for other people. She reads as blunt, strange, and unreachable — a 怪胎 (guàitāi, "freak"), which is what her classmates actually call her.

At a provincial key high school she ends up deskmates with Jiang Yubai, the one person willing to sit there. What follows is not a rescue story. They are academic rivals first, meeting through a problem-solving competition and pushing each other at the top of every ranking. The exchange that builds between them is reciprocal and specific: he is a natural socially and teaches her how to be around people; she tutors him. Neither is fixing the other for free.
