Origin & Usage

What comes against you (逆来), receive compliantly (顺受). The Yuan drama The Story of the Lute puts it in the mouth of a woman enduring what she cannot alter, and that is roughly its range. The phrase is not neutral. The undertone is criticism or pity: somebody who absorbs unfair treatment without protest, and it is the standard diagnosis of a person who has been imposed on for years and never once objected.
