Origin & Usage

The root is the Daodejing, which insists repeatedly that the soft and weak overcome the hard and strong, and offers water as the case in point — nothing is more yielding, and nothing is better at wearing down what is rigid. Later military writing took it up as tactics: use (以) softness (柔) to overcome (克) hardness (刚) by declining to meet force where it is strongest. It describes yielding as a technique rather than a temperament, which is the part learners tend to miss. The person applying it is not being nice; they are refusing to fight on ground that favours the other side.
