Origin & Usage

The phrase descends from Fan Zhongyan's 《岳阳楼记》, where a visitor climbing the tower feels his spirit widen until honour and disgrace fall away and he is simply 喜洋洋 — joyous without reserve. 洋 originally suggests vastness, the spreading of water; doubled, it turns a private happiness into an atmosphere that fills a room. It became a fixture of New Year writing because of a second, quieter reason: 洋 is a homophone for 羊, so in Goat years the phrase carries the zodiac inside it without ever naming the animal. It is the most natural thing to write on a red envelope or a doorway couplet.
