身临其境

Origin & Usage

The body (身) arriving (临) at that (其) very place (境). 临 is to come right to the edge of something and look at it, and 身 insists it was the person and not the imagination that got there — so the phrase claims physical presence, and is then used almost entirely for occasions when there was none. That contradiction is the whole device. A film, a book or a piece of reporting good enough that the audience stops being an audience: it is the standard praise for immersive work.
