人杰地灵

Origin & Usage

Wang Bo wrote it in his preface on the Pavilion of Prince Teng, matching it with a line about the region's produce and treasures: the people are outstanding (人杰) and the land is numinous (地灵). The relation runs both ways and the phrase is deliberately ambiguous about the direction — whether remarkable people arise because the place has power in it, or whether the place acquires its power from them. Chinese local pride has been using it either way ever since, and it appears on the gates of a great many towns.
