The idiom 城下之盟 (chéng xià zhī méng) originates from the historical account in the Spring and Autumn period, as recorded in the 'Zuo Zhuan' (左传). In 700 BCE, the state of Chu besieged the small state of Jiao, forcing its soldiers to remain within their city walls. After several failed assaults, the Chu general Qu Xia devised a cunning strategy. He instructed soldiers to disguise themselves as woodcutters, luring the Jiao soldiers out of the city. Once the Jiao soldiers left the safety of their walls, the Chu army ambushed them, leading to Jiao's defeat. Consequently, Jiao was compelled to sign a humiliating treaty under the city walls. The characters 城 (chéng, city), 下 (xià, under), 之 (zhī, of), and 盟 (méng, treaty) depict this scenario. In modern usage, it refers to being forced into a disadvantageous agreement due to overwhelming pressure.
