Why Goat-Year Blessings Are Puns: 羊, 阳, 洋 and 祥 in 8 Chinese Idioms
The luckiest phrases of a Goat year barely mention a goat. They borrow its sound, yáng, or its shape, hidden inside 祥 and 美. Eight idioms that show how the pun works.
Chinese New Year blessings often run on puns: a fish (鱼, yú) stands for surplus (余, yú), and a bat (蝠, fú) for good fortune (福, fú). The Goat year has one of the oldest. 羊 is pronounced yáng, exactly like 阳 (the bright, rising force of spring) and 洋 (vast, overflowing). It was also written for 祥 (auspiciousness) itself. The ancient dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines 羊 simply as 祥, and a Han bronze basin in the National Museum of China is inscribed 大吉羊, read as 大吉祥, "great good fortune". So the I Ching phrase 三阳开泰 turns up as 三羊开泰, with three goats in place of three yang lines — a pun already used in Journey to the West. The eight idioms below are the pun at work: two built on 阳, two on 洋, and four with the goat hidden inside a character (祥, 美 and 善).
