Original Text

gū shān sì běi jiǎ tíng xī,

shuǐ miàn chū píng yún jiǎo dī.

jǐ chù zǎo yīng zhēng nuǎn shù,

shuí jiā xīn yàn zhuó chūn ní.

luàn huā jiàn yù mí rén yǎn,

qiǎn cǎo cái néng mò mǎ tí.

zuì ài hú dōng xíng bù zú,

lǜ yáng yīn lǐ bái shā dī.

English Translation

North of Solitary Hill Temple, west of Jia Pavilion, the water surface has just leveled, the low clouds skim the waves. Here and there, early orioles compete for warm trees; whose new swallows are pecking at spring mud? Wild flowers are gradually becoming dazzling to the eyes; the shallow grass can barely cover the horse's hooves. What I love most is the east of the lake where I never walk enough — the white sand causeway amid the shade of green willows.

Historical Background

Written around 822 AD when Bai Juyi served as governor of Hangzhou, this poem captures the beauty of West Lake (Qiantang Lake) in early spring. Bai Juyi was a devoted lover of West Lake and built the famous causeway (Bai Causeway) that still bears his name today.

Literary Analysis

This poem is a masterclass in capturing the exact moment of early spring. Each couplet adds a new sensory detail: the risen water level, the competing orioles, the nest-building swallows, the blooming flowers, and the young grass. The progression from distant landscape to close-up details creates a cinematic walk around the lake. The final couplet reveals the poet's deep personal attachment to this place.
