Bai Ze knows every spirit and demon in existence — an omniscient, virtuous beast, generally lion- or ox-like with extra eyes and horns, that can speak human language and appears only under a virtuous ruler.
Meeting the Yellow Emperor, Bai Ze dictated a catalogue of all 11,520 kinds of supernatural beings — how to recognize and ward off each — recorded as the Bai Ze Tu (白泽图), an early demon-identification guide.
Known in Japan as Hakutaku (白澤) — fans meeting "Hakutaku" are meeting Bai Ze.
Used as a talisman against ghosts and nightmares, and rising in the West through anime and games under its Japanese reading, Hakutaku.
